What changed in AI Overviews and AI Mode links on 15 October 2026, and what should an SEO team in Spain do this week?

On 15 October 2026 Google announced more inline links, higher up in AI Mode and AI Overviews responses, a test that surfaces one or two official pages at the top with context, news carousels expanding to more languages and locations (with Preferred Sources), Dive deeper links with thumbnails, and a test of clickable creator or publisher names that lead to Search profiles in AI Mode video results. This week, a Spain team should confirm inclusion in Search generative AI features in Search Console, check whether generative AI impressions appear, prioritise official task pages and citable passages, and treat neither the official-page block nor Universal Cart as global launches.

Key takeaways

  • The 15 October announcement adds more inline links, an official-page test, expanded news carousels, Dive deeper thumbnails and a Search profiles test on AI Mode video (Google blog, Hema Budaraju).
  • Preferred Sources grew more than 7x since the start of 2026 according to Google; it is a user preference, not a ranking factor you control.
  • There are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google Search Central).
  • The generative AI performance report in Search Console has been rolled out worldwide since 31 August 2026 and reports impressions, not dedicated AI clicks.
  • Universal Cart is US-only; Search profiles remain documented for the US, Canada and India; the official-page block is a test, not a closed launch.

On 15 October 2026 Google changed how links appear inside AI Mode and AI Overviews: more inline links and higher up in the response, a test of one or two official pages at the top, news carousels in more languages and locations, Dive deeper links with thumbnails, and a test of creator or publisher names that lead to Search profiles in AI Mode video results. Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management, authored the Google Search blog post.

If you run SEO or content in Spain or Catalonia, this week is not the moment to rewrite your evergreen AI Mode guide. Separate what is a test from what is shipping, what you can already measure in Search Console, and which 12–18 October headlines do not deserve a ticket for an ES market. Product framing still lives in Google AI Mode and conversational search and how to appear in AI Overviews. This piece is the operational briefing only.

The five pieces of the 15 October announcement

Google groups the update into five pieces. Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Roundtable break them down in the same order as the official post (SEJ coverage, Seroundtable coverage).

Inline links sit inside words or phrases of the generated answer. Google says it has continued making substantial increases to their presence in AI experiences and now shows them higher up in the response more often. The post gives no percentage and no CTR impact. SEJ is equally blunt: more links and higher placement, without quantifying the increase.

If the sentence you care about sits at the end of a dense block, the inline link has little to attach to. Citability of the passage is what matters there. Use AI-citable content patterns and the AEO versus GEO framing in what AEO is rather than reopening those guides here.

2. Test of one or two official pages on top

Google will test a dedicated block at the start of some answers when there are only one or two “official” pages to complete a task or get a concrete fact, with context on why each link helps (15 October announcement). The post itself uses the verb testing. Treat it as a trial, not a closed global launch.

For an ES site, start with the URLs that should be the canonical answer to a task: refunds, order status, product docs, a legal page, a service sheet. If that URL is weak, slow or unindexed, the test does not invent eligibility. Google Search Central still says that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet (AI features and your website).

3. News carousels in more languages and locations

The carousels of timely articles already present in AI Search features are starting to expand to more locations and languages. They also highlight Preferred Sources. Google does not list which countries or languages enter each wave in the 15 October post. SEJ confirms the post does not name the markets.

Google also states a separate figure: the number of people who use Preferred Sources has grown more than 7x since the start of 2026 (same 15 October post). Preferred Sources is a user choice. If someone adds you, your content is more likely to appear highlighted in Top Stories and, in AI Mode and AI Overviews where they exist, with a “preferred” badge, provided the site is included in generative AI features in Search Console (Preferred Sources guide). Only domains and subdomains are eligible; a /blog path cannot be added in the preferences tool.

4. Dive deeper with thumbnails

Links at the end of some AI answers move to a more visible design with image thumbnails. Google had already been pushing end-of-answer suggestions; this step makes them look more clickable. There is no public figure for clicks gained.

5. Creator and publisher names that lead to Search profiles (AI Mode test)

This week Google started testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results inside AI Mode, pointing to their Search profiles. Google Help for creating a Search profile, checked on 18 October 2026, indicates availability in the United States, Canada and India, with at least 10,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok, and a minimum account age of 18 (create a Search profile). SEJ checked on the morning of 15 October that the help page still did not list AI Mode among the places where a user finds the profile. Creating a profile does not directly affect content ranking, according to the same help page.

What this means for a site in Spain

The product announcement and what your property can do tomorrow in Search Console are different jobs.

Technical eligibility. There are no extra requirements or special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode, according to the AI features guide. The guide to optimising for generative AI features still stresses foundational SEO, non-commodity content and inclusion in generative AI features in Search Console. The default control includes the site; you can exclude it under Settings > Search generative AI (generative AI control). That control is not a ranking signal for the rest of Search.

Official pages versus service pages. The top-block test favours tasks with few canonical sources: airline and refund, government and procedure, manufacturer and manual. A “best SEO agency Barcelona” landing does not fit. Prioritise task URLs (status, official pricing, documentation, support) and leave acquisition pages for the classic listing and passage citability.

News versus evergreen. Carousels widen the surface for timely coverage. A publisher or company blog with dated pieces has a chance to appear there; a service sheet does not. Preferred Sources helps if your readers choose you, not if you only publish more posts.

Video and profiles. If you produce video and meet the thresholds, the profiles test in AI Mode is a product signal, not this week’s job for most ES sites. Geographic availability of the profile remains limited per the help page.

Citability. More inline links reward passages that answer on their own, with entities and explicit limits. That work already lives in GEO and SEO with AI and measuring AI visibility. Do not promise inclusion in an AI Overview: Google does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving even when you meet the requirements (AI features).

How to measure this week (without inventing AI clicks)

Search Console has two distinct layers.

  1. Performance report (Web type). Links from AI Overviews and AI Mode enter aggregated Web traffic, as the AI features guide states. A click to an external page from AI Mode or from an AI Overview counts as a click. An AI Overview occupies a single position; all of its links inherit that position (impressions, position and clicks). That is why moving an inline link higher inside the Overview does not “improve your reported Overview position”: the position belongs to the block.

  2. Generative AI performance report. Since 31 August 2026 it has been rolled out to all sites worldwide. It shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, date and device dimensions (generative AI report). If you do not see it, you usually have too few impressions or the site is excluded from generative AI features. The operational detail of the report sits in Search generative AI performance reports; we will not re-explain it here.

Barry Schwartz notes on Seroundtable that Google still does not offer dedicated clicks in that AI report and says it keeps working with site owners on which metrics to add (Seroundtable, 15 Oct 2026). Plan with AI impressions, Web clicks and analytics conversions. An AI Overview-only CTR does not exist in Search Console today.

Measurement checklist (48–72 hours):

  • Confirm inclusion in Search generative AI.
  • Open the generative AI report; filter country Spain; export top pages.
  • Note manual queries in AI Mode/AI Overviews (incognito + signed-in) for your 10 official tasks and 10 informational queries.
  • Compare with the prior week on Web, without blaming every click rise on the link redesign.
  • If you use Preferred Sources, check that the domain (not a subdirectory) appears in the preferences tool and, if it fits editorially, offer the button or deeplink to loyal readers.

Other news this week (and what to leave out of the ES backlog)

Universal Cart (15 Oct, US only). Universal Cart launched on 15 October 2026 only in the United States, in Search and the Gemini app: a cart that groups products from several merchants, flags price drops and lets you pay with Google Pay or finish on the merchant site (Universal Cart announcement). For an ecommerce site in Spain this is product context, not an implementation ticket this week.

Apparent ChatGPT traffic drop in GA4. Several analysts measured sharp drops in sessions attributed to ChatGPT from 8–9 October 2026, with parallel rises in Direct. Search Engine Journal summarises the consensus: utm_source=chatgpt.com (and often the referrer) was missing on inline links after format changes; OpenAI reportedly confirmed a bug and a fix rolling out on 15 October (SEJ on the tracking problem). Mark the interval before you cut investment in citability outside Google.

Topics Portfolio (beta) in Bing Webmaster Tools (13 Oct). Microsoft announced a Topics Portfolio tab inside AI Performance: it groups grounding queries into themes, shows approximate topic size, cited sites and opportunities where others appear and you do not. It is beta, with AI classification and directional figures; sites with little presence may not see it (official Bing announcement). If you already use Bing Webmaster Tools, open it as a topical-coverage signal. It does not replace Search Console.

SERP poisoning / Nozzle. There was noise about result poisoning. No figure here: we did not find a primary source with a verifiable number, so there is no percentage to quote. If the real risk is spam or scaled content, go back to official policies and to site reputation abuse and scaled content.

September spam update. Useful as quality context. It is not a 15 October link change, so keep it out of the same “AI links” ticket.

Limitations and exceptions (read these before the checklist)

  • The official-pages block is a test, not a closed launch.
  • The “more than 7x” Preferred Sources growth is Google’s figure on users of the feature, not on your CTR.
  • Search profiles and Universal Cart have documented geographic limits; Spain does not appear in the profiles help page or in the cart launch.
  • The generative AI report covers impressions; AI clicks stay mixed into Web unless Google adds metrics.
  • Inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode is not guaranteed even when you meet technical requirements.
  • Preferred Sources is user-side; you can make opt-in easier, you cannot force it.
  • This briefing is not individualised professional advice on SEO investment. Budget decisions depend on your inventory, sector and risk.

Decision criteria for this week

Situation High priority this week Can wait
You have task URLs (support, docs, legal, status) Indexing, snippet, clear title and first paragraph, internal links Full site redesign
You publish dated news or analysis Preferred Sources eligibility (domain), generative AI inclusion, carousels on real ES/CA queries Mass “add us as a source” campaign with no audience
Only commercial landings Citability of objections and comparisons; Web + AI measurement Chasing the “official” test block
You produce a lot of video and meet US/CA/IN thresholds Review Search profile and the AI Mode test Forcing a profile from ES without eligibility
You see a ChatGPT drop in GA4 Mark tracking 8–15 Oct; cross-check Direct Cutting content because of the artefact

One short question: does this URL answer a task on its own, or does it only sell? If it only sells, the 15 October announcement barely moves the backlog; work the listing and the passages. If it answers a task, the official-page test is reason enough to harden that URL now.

Ops checklist (this week)

  1. Read the official 15 October post with the team (15 minutes).
  2. Verify inclusion in Search generative AI and open the AI impressions report if volume exists.
  3. List 10 “official task” URLs and 10 informational ones; check indexing and snippet in URL Inspection.
  4. Rewrite only the answer passage (40–80 useful words, with a limit or source) on the five URLs with the most AI impressions or the highest risk of losing the citation.
  5. For publishers: check the domain in Preferred Sources and, if you have a loyal audience, the button or deeplink Google documents.
  6. Mark Universal Cart and Search profiles as out of ES scope unless new evidence appears in Help.
  7. Tag the ChatGPT UTM-bug interval in analytics.
  8. If Bing brings traffic or citations, open Topics Portfolio in beta and save three topics with opportunities.

Concrete next step

Pick five task queries from your Search Console in Spain (refund, official price, documentation, service hours, order status or the equivalent in your sector). For each one, open AI Overview or AI Mode if they appear, note whether there are inline links, a carousel or a top block, and compare with your candidate URL. This week, fix only what stops you from being the obvious page: title, first paragraph, current data, indexing. After 14 days, review AI impressions and Web clicks for those five URLs. Do not use “appear in AI Overview” as a contract KPI.

If the inventory is large and you need to prioritise by business rather than by another checklist, SEO consulting usually saves loops. Measurement detail sits in the generative AI report guide and in measuring AI visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Has Google already launched the official-pages section in AI Mode and AI Overviews?

No. Google’s 15 October blog describes it as a test: some responses will show one or two official pages at the top, with context on why they help. It is not a closed rollout or a documented ranking factor. Search Engine Journal summarises it the same way: a trial for queries with one or two clear official sources.

Google has not published a CTR or click lift tied to this announcement. Search Console counts outbound clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the Web search type of the performance report, and the generative AI report focuses on impressions. Moving a link higher inside an AI Overview does not by itself change the reported position of the block, because every link in that Overview shares the same position.

What should I check in Search Console this week?

Confirm the property is included in Search generative AI features (Settings control). Open the generative AI performance report if you have enough impressions, filter by Spain and device, and note the URLs with the most impressions. In the classic Web report, read clicks and impressions without assuming a clean AI Mode split. Do not expect AI-only click metrics: Google still does not offer them in that report.

Does Preferred Sources help if I publish from Spain or Catalonia?

Preferred Sources is available globally in Top Stories and can highlight your site in AI Mode and AI Overviews where those features exist, if the user has chosen you and your site is included in generative AI features. Only domains or subdomains qualify, not a subdirectory such as /blog. It is a reader preference, not a ranking switch you flip.

Do Universal Cart or Search profiles already affect an ecommerce site or publisher in Spain?

Universal Cart launched on 15 October 2026 only in the United States, in Search and the Gemini app. Search profiles, per Google Help checked on 18 October 2026, are available in the United States, Canada and India, with follower thresholds. The clickable-name test in AI Mode points at those profiles; do not assume Spain availability without checking the current help page.

Should I panic about the ChatGPT traffic drop in GA4 this week?

Before treating it as a real loss, check whether utm_source=chatgpt.com is missing on inline links. Search Engine Journal documented, with data from Graphite, Adobe and others, an attribution issue from 8–9 October 2026, with rises in Direct and a fix rolling out on the 15th. Mark the interval in your reports and compare ChatGPT with Direct by URL before you reallocate budget.
